How did I come up with this idea? And how can it help you?
When I was so sick I couldn’t stand at the stove to cook, I began eating fruit. Mostly organic. Fresh apples, pears, bananas. Frozen berries. Not only did it sustain me, in my misery sometimes I noticed an underlying sense of joy. Extremely strange.
I began to get better. Bleeding stopped. I wondered exactly why that was. When the fog lifted, I went online to learn more about food as medicine. I heard about a study that showed the more fruit people ate, the happier they were.
You know, the more fruit and vegetables I ate, the better I felt, the better my medical tests were. The less inflammation I had in my body. YMMV. But as I read through studies, I became convinced a plant based whole food diet is the solution to many problems.
In America today, 9 of 10 adults are considered “overfat.” In other words, their waist circumference is more than half their height. Much of the obesity epidemic is due to overconsumption of sugar and junk foods.
And junk food is not only lacking in nutrition, it may be associated with obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. Processed and junk food could be killing you.
Fruit is packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, phytonutrients and fiber that fills you up without adding a ton of calories like junk food does. Fruit is a low energy density food. In other words, it fills you up with relatively few calories.
What if we swap out the twenty-five teaspoons of sugar most Americans consume daily—the 400 calories we’d need to ditch in order to drop the weight? What if we have whole, delicious fruit instead of the junk?
Studies show fruit can protect against stroke and cardiovascular disease. And in my case, I’m convinced it helped bring down inflammation in my gut. What are we waiting for?
